Hilton Lee Smith is a true hometown hero. Born in Giddings, Texas, he went on to become one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. He began playing baseball on his father's local team. He also attended Prairie View A&M for two years.
After stays with the Austin Black Senators, the Monroe Monarchs, and the 1935 Semi-Pro Championship team in Bismarck, North Dakota, Smith went on to play in Kansas City for the Kansas City Monarchs.
It was in Kansas City that Smith's fame and prowess as a true big-league pitcher grew. There, he teamed up with the great Satchel Paige to become a formidable pitching tandem.
Hilton Lee Smith was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. To recognize the accomplishments of one of its most famous citizens, the City of Giddings has named its newest baseball field "Hilton Lee Smith Field".
